Here are a few guidelines to help you pick the right sweetener for you.
SPLENDA (sucralose)
Splenda is considered a low-calorie sweetner and falls into the Sugar Free, No Added Sugar and No Sugar categories.
This sweetener is not affected by heat and retains its sweetness in hot beverages, baked goods, and processed foods.
MALTITOL (sugar alcohol)
Maltitol is considered a reduced-calorie sweetener and falls into the Sugar Free, No Added Sugar and No Sugar categories.
These sweeteners have about half the calories of sugars and are considered a separate type of carbohydrates. Even though they are called sugar alcohols, they do not contain alcohol.
AGAVE NECTAR
Agave Nectar is considered an all-natural liquid sweetener. It comes from the sap produced in the heart of the blue agave cactus--the same cactus some tequilas are made from.
Agave nectar is about 1.5 times sweeter than sucrose. It is described as low-glycemic, and helps reduce calories since you can use about 25% less agave nectar when substituting it for sugar.
To make your selection a little easier here are the definitions for No Sugar – No Sugar Added – Sugar Free – All Natural.
• No sugar means the product does not contain sugar at all. It may contain sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners.
• No added sugar means that during processing, no extra sugar was added. However, the original source might have contained sugar such as fructose in fruit juice. Additional sweeteners such as sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners might have been added.
• Sugar free means that the product contains no sugars. It may contain sugar alcohols or artificial sweeteners, however.
• All natural simply means that the product does not contain artificial ingredients. It may contain natural sweeteners, such as sugars or sugar alcohol.
